Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Türkiye’s railway network has been expanded to 13,919 kilometers through work carried out over the past 24 years, while 2,251 kilometers of high-speed train lines have been built from scratch.
In a written statement, Uraloglu provided information on railway projects carried out since 2002, when the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) came to power.
Uraloglu said Türkiye ranks sixth in Europe and eighth in the world in high-speed train operations.
“We have carried 114 million passengers on our high-speed trains to date,” he said.
“We have made our railways a strong part of Türkiye’s transportation system once again. We expanded our railway network from 10,948 kilometers to 13,919 kilometers. We built 2,251 kilometers of high-speed train lines from scratch,” he added.
Uraloglu said Türkiye had not only built new railway lines but also carried out a comprehensive transformation of existing infrastructure.
He said the entire railway network had been renewed and modernized.
“We transformed our existing infrastructure into a railway network at world standards by making 61% of our lines signaled and more than half of them electrified,” Uraloglu said.
Uraloglu said new high-speed train and railway investments are continuing across Türkiye.
He said construction continues on several lines, including Ankara-Izmir, Halkali-Kapikule, Bandirma-Bursa-Yenisehir-Osmaneli, Mersin-Adana-Osmaniye-Gaziantep, Yerkoy-Kayseri, Kirikkale-Corum and Karaman-Ulukisla.
“We will continue expanding the high-speed train network,” Uraloglu said.
“By 2028, we aim to increase the number of provinces directly connected by high-speed train from 11 to 27,” he added.
