The European seed potato sector is facing significant trade disruptions as Turkish authorities recently rejected more than 5,500 tonnes of seed potatoes imported from EU member states and the U.K. This volume constitutes approximately 20% of the total EU seed potato exports to Türkiye.

The rejections are attributed to the detection of pests upon arrival in Türkiye, despite the meticulous pre-export testing confirming that the shipments were pest-free and compliant with international phytosanitary standards.

EU seed potato sector calls for science-based talks

The European Union's seed potato industry is calling for urgent dialogue between the EU and Turkish authorities to address the issue. The sector emphasizes the need for a science-based approach to resolve the discrepancies in pest detection and classification systems between the two regions.

Such measures are crucial to restore mutual trust and ensure the smooth trade of seed potatoes, which are vital for agricultural stability and economic cooperation. As the situation develops, stakeholders are closely monitoring the impact on trade relations and seeking constructive solutions to mitigate further disruptions.
