Türkiye has been elected to chair the International Transport Forum (ITF) for the 2027-2028 term, assuming leadership of one of the world’s largest transport policy platforms at a time global trade and logistics networks are undergoing major transformation, according to officials.

Representing Türkiye at the 2026 ITF Summit in Leipzig, Germany, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Thursday Ankara was pleased to assume the role and outlined the country’s transport vision for the coming years.

Strategic role in reshaping global trade routes

"Türkiye is not only a transit country at the intersection of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, but also a strategic hub connecting regions, markets and people," Uraloglu stated. "This position gives us the responsibility of ensuring resilient and uninterrupted transport links between continents."

He added that geopolitical risks, climate change and digital transformation were reshaping global transport policies at a time when supply chains were being reorganized worldwide.

Uraloglu pointed to Türkiye’s large-scale investments in highways, high-speed railways, ports and logistics centers, while describing the Middle Corridor transport route linking Asia and Europe and the Development Road project connecting the Gulf to Türkiye as critical initiatives for global trade connectivity.

Türkiye to lead ITF agenda

Türkiye will place resilience and sustainability at the center of its presidency agenda during the 2027-2028 term, Uraloglu stated.

Held annually in May, the ITF summit brings together transport ministers, industry representatives and academics from around the world and is regarded as one of the leading international gatherings on transport policy.

Türkiye’s presidency, covering the period from May 2027 to May 2028, will include chairing the ITF Council of Ministers of Transport and Transport Management Board meetings, while also leading preparations and organization of the annual ITF Summit in Leipzig.
