Türkiye's Trade Ministry announced that the country has positively distinguished itself in the United States' newly announced customs tariffs, remaining in the low tariff category and being evaluated as a balanced and positive commercial partner.

The ministry stated that Turkish exporters maintain their competitive strength in global markets as the U.S. implements tariff increases ranging from 15% to 50% worldwide.

"Significant advantage for Türkiye"

According to the ministry's statement, countries without trade agreements with the U.S. now face higher tariffs on their exports to America following President Donald Trump's announcement of new customs duties.

"Türkiye has positively distinguished itself in the new customs tariffs," the statement said. "Türkiye's continuation as one of the countries with the lowest customs duties in this new arrangement shows that it is evaluated as a balanced and positive commercial partner by the U.S., that Turkish exporters maintain their competitive strength in global markets, and that Türkiye's strong position in foreign trade continues."

The ministry emphasized: "This situation creates a significant advantage for Türkiye compared to many countries, particularly Asian and Latin American nations."

Negotiations continue for automotive sector

The statement noted that the U.S. has decided to apply a 50% new tax on copper, steel and aluminum exporters for steel products, but this increase is limited only to products such as copper pipes and cables.

Products like refined copper, ore and concentrate remain outside the scope, according to the ministry.

"This sudden change has led to price drops and oversupply in U.S. copper markets," the statement said.

Diplomatic talks ongoing

The ministry identified Canada, Mexico, Thailand and India among the U.S.'s main partners that have not yet reached trade agreements, noting that tariffs on India will be applied with additional monetary penalties.

"Meanwhile, intensive negotiations continue at diplomatic and technical levels between Türkiye and U.S. authorities regarding tariffs applied in strategic sectors such as steel, automotive and copper," the statement said. "Negotiations aimed at securing lower rates in favor of our country continue constructively."

The ministry added: "Our contacts also continue to achieve an opening that meets our expectations, especially for our textile and apparel sector. Türkiye's priority is to ensure that foreign trade with the U.S. progresses within a predictable, fair and sustainable framework."

The statement concluded: "As seen in the latest decree issued by the U.S. President, Türkiye is among the countries with a positively progressing negotiation process, which shows that mutual dialogue and cooperation in bilateral trade relations are strengthening."
