Türkiye is set to double the liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification capacity at its southern Dortyol Terminal by deploying a second Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU), Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced during a press briefing on-site on Sunday.

The current FSRU stationed at the terminal, the Ertugrul Gazi vessel, converts up to 28 million cubic meters of LNG per day into gas phase for injection into the national grid.

The planned addition will match this output, effectively raising the facility’s total capacity to 56 million cubic meters daily.

FSRU upgrade to ease winter gas demand

Minister Bayraktar emphasized that the move is aimed at further enhancing Türkiye’s energy security, particularly in the winter when natural gas demand spikes across key provinces in the region.

"This facility currently provides winter gas demand for around 17 provinces, including Hatay and Osmaniye," he said, noting that the existing terminal has handled transfers from approximately 140 LNG carriers over the past eight years.

Engineering work for the new FSRU unit is currently ongoing. Once completed, Türkiye’s state-run energy firm BOTAS will oversee its integration into the national supply infrastructure.

New terminal planned to raise Türkiye's LNG capacity

Alongside the Dortyol expansion, Türkiye is also planning to establish another FSRU terminal along the Mediterranean coast between Gazipasa and Anamur.

The minister said this second facility would help further diversify the country’s gas supply sources, enabling LNG imports to meet a larger share of national demand.

Currently, Türkiye meets a substantial portion of its natural gas needs through pipelines from neighboring countries, as well as domestic production from the Black Sea’s Sakarya Gas Field.

However, LNG shipments have increasingly become a key pillar of the energy strategy due to pricing flexibility and supply diversification.

"Our LNG infrastructure now allows us to access gas at more competitive rates, strengthening both price stability and supply security," Bayraktar noted.

The government aims to raise the country’s LNG import capacity from 160 million cubic meters to 200 million cubic meters per day within two years, a volume that would represent nearly half of Türkiye’s total daily consumption.

This expansion builds on Türkiye’s existing LNG infrastructure, which includes five terminals, two onshore and three FSRUs, positioning the country to boost flexibility and reduce dependence on pipeline imports.
