Türkiye will produce its first domestically developed six-axle electric locomotive, featuring approximately 50% more power than current four-axle models, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced in a written statement.

The National CoCo Type Mainline Locomotive, developed by Türkiye Rail System Utilities Industry Corporation (TURASAS), has completed its concept and preliminary design phases with a target output of 7.2 megawatts (MW).

"The National CoCo Type Mainline Locomotive will be our country's first domestic and national six-axle electric locomotive. We have completed the concept and preliminary design phases," Uraloglu stated.

The minister emphasized that Türkiye will produce its most powerful electric and diesel-electric locomotives through this project, with the new locomotive delivering approximately 50% more power than the existing four-axle E-5000 model.

Diesel-electric version specifications

The diesel-electric variant will be designed with 3,750 horsepower (hp), positioning it as the most powerful in its class within Türkiye.

"The diesel-electric version will be the most powerful in its class," Uraloglu noted, highlighting the locomotive's competitive specifications.

Modular design to reduce costs

TURASAS has implemented a modular design approach for both electric and diesel-electric versions, creating common bogie and chassis main subassemblies to streamline production.

"With modular design, we have commonly designed the bogie and chassis main subassemblies of the electric and diesel-electric locomotives. Thus, we aimed to shorten production time and reduce costs," Uraloglu explained.

The minister added that the company is transferring experience gained from the E-5000 project to this new development.

"We are transferring the experience we gained from the E-5000 to this project. By using the same product family, we will also reduce spare parts variety. This locomotive will be the most powerful in its class in our country," he stated.
