Türkiye plans to sign an energy agreement with Chevron in February, following a previous deal with Exxon, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said.

In a post on social media, Bayraktar said Türkiye would continue signing similar agreements through international partnerships and would share concrete projects with the public.

Six new drilling operations planned in Black Sea

Speaking on A Para, Bayraktar said six new drilling operations would be carried out in the Black Sea as part of Türkiye’s efforts to explore and develop its own energy resources both offshore and on land.

“Our goal is to search for and find our own resources in Türkiye,” he said, adding that the country aims to double its current production this year.

Bayraktar said the new drilling locations were selected based on geological data and seismic studies, including one area off the coast of Rize’s Cayeli district that shows signs of oil, though he stressed that reserve estimates would only be shared after drilling.

National energy policy and production targets

Bayraktar said Türkiye is transitioning to what he described as “National Energy and Mining Policy 2.0,” marking the 10th anniversary of the strategy implemented since 2016.

He said Türkiye is focused on ensuring energy supply security amid rising demand driven by economic growth and population increases, while also aiming to reduce dependence on foreign energy sources.

Bayraktar reiterated Türkiye’s 2053 net-zero emissions target and said the country’s role as host and chair of the UN Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP31) underscores the importance of its climate goals.

Sakarya Gas Field expansion underway

Bayraktar said production at the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea is increasing and that 2026 will be a key year, with output expected to double.

He said Black Sea gas production is projected to supply natural gas to 8 million households by the third quarter of 2026. By 2028, Türkiye aims to reach daily production of 40–45 million cubic meters, or 16–17 billion cubic meters annually, meeting the needs of about 17 million households.

Bayraktar said the third phase of development at the Sakarya Gas Field will be completed as part of these plans.

Fleet expansion supports exploration goals

Bayraktar said all four existing drilling ships; Fatih, Yavuz, Kanuni and Abdulhamid Han are required to support ongoing drilling, completion and maintenance activities, alongside certification processes.

He said Türkiye also needs additional capacity for new exploration, noting opportunities in the Central and Eastern Black Sea.

In this context, the drilling vessel Yildirim has joined the fleet and departed from Tasucu, with plans to enter the Black Sea after transiting the Bosphorus.

Bayraktar said the ship would support Türkiye’s expanded exploration efforts as part of its broader strategy to boost domestic energy production and reduce external dependence.
