Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced Thursday that Türkiye will begin exporting 6 million cubic meters (approximately 212 million cubic feet) of natural gas per day to Syria, with plans to scale this up to an annual volume of 2 billion cubic meters.

The gas will be used to generate electricity in the war-torn country, Bayraktar indicated.

In a televised interview, Bayraktar said the natural gas will be delivered via Kilis to the city of Aleppo, where it will power a natural gas facility. He explained that infrastructure work is already underway on the Syrian side of the border and expressed confidence in launching the gas flow within three months. He noted that Türkiye’s pipeline system had already reached the Syrian border, enabling rapid progress.

“This daily volume of 6 million cubic meters will be used at a natural gas power plant in Aleppo,” Bayraktar said, adding that the fuel will help stabilize Syria’s damaged energy infrastructure.

Türkiye to expand electricity exports to Syria

Alongside the gas supply, Türkiye is also advancing efforts to deliver electricity to northern Syria. Bayraktar said Türkiye currently exports around 200 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Aleppo. With international approvals now in place, he said the capacity could soon rise by an additional 500 MW, potentially reaching between 700 and 800 MW in the near future.

Bayraktar emphasized that supporting stability and recovery in Syria remains a top strategic priority for Türkiye. He said the prolonged conflict had severely damaged the country's entire infrastructure.

Referring to a recent meeting with Syria’s new energy minister, Bayraktar recounted that the minister had made Türkiye his first foreign visit. During the meeting, the minister reportedly told him, "I need 10,000 megawatts of power for Syria, but I am currently only able to generate 1,700 megawatts."

Bayraktar described widespread reliance on generators for household electricity across Syria, with mobile generation becoming the norm. He stressed the significance of Türkiye’s contribution not only in exports but also in helping Syria revitalize its domestic resources.

“Beyond our own energy exports,” Bayraktar said, “it is essential that Syria mobilize its own oil, gas, and mineral resources to meet internal needs and reintegrate them into the economy as swiftly as possible.”
