Türkiye’s first floating natural gas production unit, named Osman Gazi, docked at Filyos Port in Zonguldak on the Black Sea coast on Saturday, aiming to double the country’s natural gas production in the region.
Osman Gazi was dispatched from the Presidential Dolmabahce Office in Istanbul on May 29, during a ceremony marking the 572nd anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar also attended the ceremony.
The vessel proceeded through the Istanbul Strait en route to its deployment site in the Black Sea.
Once operational, the platform will have the capacity to process up to 10.5 million cubic meters (370.9 million cubic feet) of natural gas daily and transfer as much as 10 million cubic meters per day to onshore facilities. This will raise total daily production in the Black Sea to 20 million cubic meters, effectively doubling the current output.
Officials expect this increase to meet the natural gas needs of approximately 8 million households across Türkiye.
The platform will remain operational at its designated location for 20 years. Measuring 298.5 meters in length, 56 meters in width and 29.5 meters in depth, the structure is designed to accommodate 140 personnel.
Its operations are scheduled to commence by mid-2026, following preparatory work.
Prior to its deployment, the platform underwent renewal work at a shipyard in Canakkale, where it was placed in a dry dock on Sept. 26, 2024. After completing refurbishment activities on May 27, the platform was floated out of the dock and departed for Istanbul, completing its passage through the Bosphorus on May 29.
