One of Türkiye's leading conglomerates, Sabanci Holding, has reportedly entered negotiations to sell its CarrefourSA supermarket and hypermarket operations to Turkish discount chain A101 and wholesale group Anpagross.

The talks focus on a potential split of CarrefourSA’s retail portfolio, with A101 expected to acquire the supermarket segment and Anpagross eyeing the hypermarkets, business intelligence platform Mergermarket reported.

While the report did not specify any details regarding the valuation or timeline of a potential transaction, it indicated that the discussions remain at a preliminary stage and that no binding agreement has yet been reached.

CarrefourSA’s decades-long joint venture faces potential divestment

The development follows reports from October suggesting that Sabanci was considering exiting low-margin subsidiaries such as CarrefourSA and Teknosa as part of a broader restructuring strategy that prioritizes business areas with higher return on equity and scalability potential.

CarrefourSA, a joint venture between Sabanci Holding and French retailer Carrefour, has been active in Türkiye since 1991. Sabanci controls 57% of the company, which operates across 71 provinces with a network of 1,250 stores and over 10,000 employees.

The company's shares, listed on Türkiye's Borsa Istanbul, closed Friday's session up 10% following the report.

CarrefourSA reports continued financial strain

Over recent years, CarrefourSA has faced deepening financial challenges, generating ₺65.71 billion ($2.00 billion) in revenue but posting a net loss of ₺2.85 billion ($86.9 million). Losses widened further in the third quarter of 2025, reaching ₺4.70 billion ($110.38 million).

As of the last quarter, CarrefourSA reported ₺35.09 billion ($824.1 million) in total assets and ₺34.47 billion in liabilities, with a debt-to-equity ratio of 60.3%.

Thus, the deteriorating balance sheet positions CarrefourSA among Sabanci Holding’s financially weakest and least profitable subsidiaries.

Founded in 1967 and headquartered in Istanbul, Sabanci Holding is one of Türkiye’s largest conglomerates, operating around 60 subsidiaries and generating a combined revenue of ₺195.09 billion ($5.95 billion) in 2024.
