Türkiye’s unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage points, or 168,000 people, to 8.5% in August, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) reported on Tuesday.
The increase brought the total number of jobless people back above 3 million, figures show.
Unemployment among men was measured at 6.8%, compared with 11.6% for women.
Among the youth population aged 15–24, the unemployment rate rose by 0.8 percentage points to 16% in August. Within this group, unemployment was 12.4% for men and 22.7% for women.
The rate of underutilized labor, also known as the broad unemployment—which includes time-related underemployment, the potential labor force, and the unemployed—stood at 29.7% in August, an increase of 0.1 percentage points from July. This measure reflects people who are either without work, working fewer hours than they wish, or available but not actively seeking employment.
The number of employed people increased by 208,000 during the month, bringing total employment to 32.83 million, raising the overall employment rate to 49.4%. Employment rates stood at 66.6% for men and 32.6% for women.
Meanwhile, the labor force expanded by 376,000 to reach 35.87 million people. The labor force participation rate rose by 0.6 percentage points to 54.0%. When broken down by gender, participation stood at 71.5% for men and 36.9% for women.
