U.S. semiconductor leader Qualcomm announced Monday a $2.4 billion agreement to acquire British chipmaker Alphawave, marking a major step in its effort to strengthen its footprint in artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure.
The acquisition will bring together Qualcomm’s energy-efficient custom processors with Alphawave’s advanced high-speed connectivity technologies, according to the company's statement.
By combining their expertise, the companies aim to deliver comprehensive solutions for AI workloads, data-intensive applications, and next-generation computing systems.
Alphawave develops key components that accelerate the transfer and processing of large volumes of data — a critical need for cloud computing, AI inference, and high-performance storage. Its technologies are already central to the infrastructure behind various global data systems.
Qualcomm emphasized that the integration of Alphawave’s innovations with its own CPU and NPU platforms would enable it to better serve the growing demand for scalable and power-efficient data center solutions. Executives from both companies highlighted their complementary strengths and shared ambition to drive innovation across a wide range of high-growth sectors.
Cristiano Amon, president and CEO of Qualcomm, noted that Alphawave’s portfolio aligns naturally with Qualcomm’s existing technologies and future goals. Tony Pialis, CEO of Alphawave, described the deal as a defining opportunity to broaden their reach, enhance capabilities, and create long-term value through joint innovation.
Both companies view the deal as a foundation for expanding their presence in fast-evolving AI ecosystems. By aligning their technologies, Qualcomm aims to support a new generation of connected computing applications, from enterprise AI to advanced networking and storage systems.
The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, subject to standard closing conditions. Once finalized, Alphawave will operate privately under the Qualcomm Group, supporting Qualcomm’s broader mission to lead in AI-driven compute and connectivity technologies.
