Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced Friday that Ukraine and Russia have reached an agreement to exchange 1,000 prisoners from each side, marking a significant development in ongoing peace negotiations.
"We have reached an agreement with Russia on the exchange of 1,000 people for 1,000 people," Umerov told reporters following a trilateral meeting between Türkiye, Russia, and Ukraine at the Presidential Dolmabahce Office in Istanbul.
The high-level talks, part of broader peace negotiations between the warring nations, focused on several key issues including a potential ceasefire and prisoner exchanges, as well as the possibility of a future meeting at the leadership level.
Umerov indicated that officials are still developing the practical aspects of the exchange. "Our colleagues are in contact and we will exchange all documents. Now we need to make the prisoner exchange. We will inform you soon about what the next stage will be," he said.
The Istanbul meeting represents Türkiye's continuing role as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, positioning itself as a diplomatic bridge between the two nations.
Neither Russian officials nor Turkish representatives have issued immediate public statements about the agreement's details or implementation timeline.
