Authorities in southeastern Türkiye seized 159 items believed to be historical artifacts during an operation in Halfeti, a district of Sanliurfa province, and detained one suspect.
According to a statement from the Sanliurfa Governor's Office, provincial gendarmerie teams searched an address in Halfeti as part of efforts to protect cultural and natural assets. The gendarmerie is Türkiye's law enforcement agency that operates outside major urban police jurisdictions.
During the search, teams seized 140 objects, three books and 16 coins that were assessed as possible historical artifacts.
The search also turned up an unlicensed hunting rifle, a precision scale and a detector.
Following the operation, authorities took one suspect into custody, with processing currently underway at the gendarmerie command.
