The 17th International Istanbul Opera and Ballet Festival, organized by the General Directorate of State Opera and Ballet, has officially commenced in Istanbul with the premiere of "Lucia di Lammermoor" at the Ataturk Cultural Center (AKM).

The opening production, staged by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet (IDOB), features Gaetano Donizetti’s celebrated opera, regarded as one of the masterpieces of Italian Romantic repertoire.

The work, with a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano based on Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, portrays the tragic story of Lucia, a young woman caught between rival families in 19th-century Scotland.

The creative team includes set design by Ferhat Karakaya, costume design by Serdar Basbug, and lighting design by Laurent Castaingt.

In the premiere performance, the principal roles were performed by Hale Soner as Lucia, Ufuk Toker as Edgardo, Caner Akgun as Enrico Ashton, Berk Dalkilic as Arturo Bucklaw, Burak Bilgili as Raimondo Bidebent, Ipek Zehra Evre as Alisa, and Emre Parlar as Normanno.

The opera will be restaged on May 23 and May 30 at the AKM Turkish Telekom Opera Hall as part of the festival program.

The 17th International Istanbul Opera and Ballet Festival will continue until June 10, featuring a series of opera and ballet performances, as well as productions involving both national and international artists across multiple venues in Istanbul.
