A documentary about convicted Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has earned an estimated $15 million during its opening weekend in North America, marking the biggest debut for a non-music documentary in more than two decades.
You Can See Everything, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, opened in 855 theaters across the United States and Canada, with more than 2,000 screenings selling out over the weekend, according to distributor A24.
The film finished second at the North American box office, behind Street Fighter, which earned $31 million across 3,575 theaters.
Despite its more limited release, the documentary brought in approximately $17,544 per theater, more than twice the average recorded by Street Fighter.
The opening also marked the strongest debut for a non-music documentary since Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 earned nearly $24 million in 2004.
Produced largely in secret over three years, the two-hour-and-55-minute documentary follows Holmes during the final weeks before she entered federal prison in 2023.
According to A24, the project began when Holmes invited a skeptical film crew to document her final 34 days before reporting to prison.
The film features Holmes alongside her partner, Billy Evans, and their two children, examining how the former Silicon Valley executive sought to present herself following the collapse of Theranos.
Holmes was convicted in 2022 of defrauding investors in the blood-testing company, which had claimed its technology could carry out numerous medical tests using only small blood samples.
The documentary's performance also set another box office milestone, becoming the biggest opening for a film released in fewer than 1,000 theaters since Borat debuted with $26.5 million in 2006.
Its strong opening followed widespread critical attention and positive audience reactions, with more than 70% of opening-weekend viewers reportedly under the age of 35.
The turnout suggested that younger moviegoers played a significant role in driving demand for the nearly three-hour documentary.
Following its North American debut, You Can See Everything is preparing for its international rollout, with releases scheduled for Australia on Nov. 12 and Britain on Nov. 20.
