French double bassist and composer Renaud Garcia-Fons will take the stage at Istanbul's Cemal Resit Rey (CRR) Concert Hall on Nov. 6 with his "Blue Maqam" project, bringing together Eastern and Mediterranean musical traditions with jazz, blues and Afro-Latin rhythms.
The concert, scheduled for 8:00 p.m., will feature Garcia-Fons alongside his daughter Solea Garcia-Fons on vocals, Stephan Caracci on vibraphone and bass marimba, and Jean-Luc Di Fraya on percussion, according to a statement from CRR, a concert venue operated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
Built around Garcia-Fons' original compositions, "Blue Maqam" draws on the Mediterranean's musical heritage while incorporating influences ranging from Persian music to Irish traditions.
The project takes its name from maqam, a system of melodic modes used in Middle Eastern and other regional musical traditions, and brings these influences together with jazz, blues and Afro-Latin rhythms.
Garcia-Fons' approach places the double bass at the center of the musical arrangements, allowing the instrument to take on both melodic and rhythmic roles.
The album also features songs performed in eight languages, with lyrics written by Garcia-Fons and his daughter forming an important part of the project's musical storytelling.
Following his classical music training, Garcia-Fons expanded his work into jazz, flamenco and Mediterranean musical traditions, developing an approach that treats the double bass as a solo instrument capable of carrying both melody and rhythm.
"Blue Maqam" brings together these influences through vocal performances and an instrumental ensemble, reflecting the musical styles Garcia-Fons has explored throughout his career.
