The Secret Society of Hertford Crafters has transformed Parliament Square in Hertford, U.K., into a vibrant tapestry of yarn, weaving together colorful patterns, playful creatures, and intricate designs. Using mostly Turkish-made yarn, the society’s creations are drawing locals and tourists alike, turning the town center into a whimsical, interactive display.
Founded in 2017, the society started with a handful of women making simple mailbox decorations. Today, it has grown to around 150 members, including beginner knitters, skilled crocheters, quilters, and felters. Beyond crafting, the group aims to spread joy, raise awareness about food waste, promote environmental care, strengthen community bonds, and support local charities.
Members meet three times a week over tea to plan and work on projects. A volunteer team also collects surplus fresh food from local supermarkets every day, ensuring it reaches the homeless and families in need.
Twice a year, the society creates themed yarn and felt installations throughout Hertford. Donations of leftover yarn help bring the projects to life, with the combined pieces forming large-scale, cohesive displays that cover streets, statues, and public spaces in vibrant color.
Alongside the installations, members sell handmade yarn toys and accessories. All proceeds go to charities chosen by the society, linking creativity directly to community support.
The most recent display transformed Parliament Square into a lively scene depicting Hertford’s rivers, wildlife, and community life. Ducks, herons, otters, bees, butterflies, and fish were incorporated alongside swimmers, canoeists, cyclists, dog walkers, runners, and picnickers, capturing the town’s natural beauty and energy.
Not all of the display is idyllic: one section depicts a river filled with litter, emphasizing the importance of keeping nature clean. The installation has quickly become a popular spot for photos, drawing attention to both its artistry and its environmental message.
Kath Carter, a retired police officer and society member, explained that much of the yarn comes from Türkiye. “You can see on the labels that they were made in Türkiye with messages like ‘Made with love in Türkiye.’ Residents also donate leftover yarn after seeing our projects,” she said.
Carter described how the team sets up early in the morning to surprise the public. Past projects include recreating the Tower of London poppies at Hertford Castle in 2018 to mark the centenary of World War I’s end, inspiring the society’s tradition of biannual thematic displays.
The installations brighten the town and attract attention from cyclists, walkers, and children visiting during holidays. The society also organizes quizzes and children’s activities, offering small prizes to keep the community engaged.
