Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar visited Istanbul's historic Yedikule Fortress on Tuesday, taking a closer look at ongoing restoration work at the landmark before heading to Ankara for a two-day NATO summit.
Magyar was accompanied by Fatih Municipality Mayor Mehmet Ergun Turan and Hungarian Consul General in Istanbul Laszlo Keller during the visit. Fatih Municipality is the local authority responsible for the historic district where the fortress stands.
Turan guided the Hungarian delegation through Yedikule Fortress, a seven-towered complex built almost six centuries ago and one of Istanbul's prominent heritage sites.
During the tour, the mayor briefed Magyar and Keller on the restoration and revitalization work underway at the fortress. He also underlined the site's place in Istanbul's historical memory while sharing the latest updates on the project.
Following the visit, Turan said on social media that he was pleased to host Magyar and Keller at the historic edifice.
"We had the opportunity to tour our fortress, which holds an important place in Istanbul's historical memory, and share information about our ongoing work," Turan said, thanking the Hungarian prime minister and the consul general for their visit.
Magyar also reportedly visited other Istanbul landmarks, including the Sultanahmet Mosque, before continuing on to Ankara.
The Hungarian prime minister is set to attend the two-day NATO summit in the Turkish capital, where alliance leaders are gathering for a major diplomatic meeting hosted by Türkiye.
