Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter have officially signed on to star alongside Tom Holland, who will play the legendary dancer and actor Fred Astaire, in Sony Pictures' upcoming untitled Fred Astaire biopic, directed by Paul King with Amy Pascal in production.
Holland was first attached to portray Astaire five years earlier.
Qualley will play Adele Astaire, Fred's older sister and his original stage partner on Broadway and in London's West End.
Carpenter will star as Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire's frequent film co-star, whose screen partnership with Astaire produced some of the most celebrated musical sequences of the 1930s.
"I am thrilled and honored to have been entrusted with telling the story of Fred Astaire and his original dance partner, his big sister Adele, to the big screen," King said in a statement about the casting news.
"Fred left a timeless legacy of dance on film, most famously in his collaborations with Ginger Rogers, while Adele’s work has been lost to history. Indeed, no footage of her dancing survives. The cinematic challenge of bringing to life these icons of the twentieth century is one that I could not imagine without Tom Holland, Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter by my side."
King directs the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Steven Levenson, adapting Kathleen Riley's book "The Astaires: Fred & Adele."
The legendary entertainer Fred Astaire, whose iconic career spanned roughly seven decades, left an indelible mark on Hollywood through classic movie musicals like "Top Hat" and "Swing Time."
Starting in vaudeville and Broadway with his sister Adele, Astaire transitioned to Hollywood in the 1930s, starring in over 30 film musicals.
He achieved iconic status alongside Ginger Rogers in a celebrated RKO partnership and later starred with Judy Garland and Audrey Hepburn, earning an Academy Honorary Award in 1950 before he died in 1987.
Astaire's legacy will reach a new generation in an upcoming Sony Pictures biopic, with filming scheduled to begin in January 2027.
