Mozart’s renowned opera "Don Giovanni" is set to be staged by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet at Ataturk Cultural Center, commonly known as AKM, one of Türkiye’s leading performing arts venues located in the heart of Istanbul.

The opera will be performed on Feb. 5, 7, and 11 at the AKM Turk Telekom Opera Hall, a modern opera house within the Ataturk Cultural Center complex that regularly plays host to large-scale international and national productions.

By bringing "Don Giovanni" back to this stage, the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet is lining up a work that holds a central place in the global operatic repertoire.

A dark comedy exploring human nature

Written with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, "Don Giovanni" is widely described as a dark comedy that lays out both the best and worst sides of human nature.

The opera is known for blending humor with moral tension, and for setting up a narrative that continues to speak to audiences across cultures and generations.

Direction and musical leadership

The staging has been put together by director Aytac Manizade, while the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Orchestra will be led alternately by conductors Ibrahim Yazici and Christian Blex.

This shared musical leadership is expected to bring out different shades of Mozart’s score while keeping the overall interpretation cohesive throughout the run.
