Olivia Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields charity festival raised $20 million for women's well-being initiatives, held in Irvine, California on August 29. She had pledged $10 million ahead of the event, to be divided among ten nonprofit partners.
Philanthropist Melinda French Gates committed an additional $10 million through her organization Pivotal Ventures, part of Pivotal, the philanthropic group she founded in 2015 to advance social progress for women and girls.
Gates surprised the crowd before Rodrigo's Saturday set, saying the festival was "showing a new generation how much their voices matter." She added that she was proud to support Rodrigo's vision. Her gift doubled the festival's total to $20 million.
The $20 million will be divided equally among 10 nonprofit organizations supporting women and girls.
Recipients include Planned Parenthood, the National Women's Law Center, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Baby2Baby, the Center for Reproductive Rights, FreeForm, Jhpiego, the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and the National Institute for Reproductive Health.
Attendees enjoyed performances from a lineup that included Chappell Roan, Doechii, Bikini Kill, Santigold, Sarah McLachlan, Eli, Mitski, Not for Radio, Rachel Chinouriri, the Breeders, and more.
Throughout the day, concertgoers could learn about the nonprofit partners through Daisy Chain Reaction, an initiative highlighting the causes involved.
Rodrigo said the artists and activists on hand give her hope despite what she called a regression of women's rights, adding that the festival's name reflects how separate parts can join together to form something strong and unbreakable.
