Pera Museum in Istanbul will host screenings for the 19th Documentarist Istanbul Documentary Days, bringing together 28 documentary films that explore migration, memory, women’s testimonies, environmental destruction, cultural heritage and the search for justice.
Organized as part of the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Pera Museum Film and Video Programs, known as Pera Film, the selection will meet audiences at the Pera Museum Auditorium from June 12 to 21. The screenings will be free of charge, and no reservations will be required.
According to the museum, the program is largely made up of films from the Türkiye Panorama section. The selection brings forward stories ranging from lives left in limbo along migration routes to the quiet traces of family memory, while also touching on ecological damage and cultural heritage.
The opening program will feature four short films. “Ben Yerde Olurken” (While I Am on the Ground) focuses on Iran’s Green Movement, a protest that emerged in Iran, while “Iceride, Vadi Sarki Soyluyor” (Inside, the Valley Sings) follows the stories of prisoners held in long-term solitary confinement.
“Burcu’nun Melekleri” (Burcu’s Angels) centers on a vintage shop in Canada, and “Harabelerin Fisiltisi” (Whisper of the Ruins) traces railway lines used during deportations.
Several films in the selection deal with migration, belonging and the experience of being caught between places. These include “Transit,” “One Homeland Two Homes,” “Salman Gitmek Istiyor,” “Ask Ask Hurriyet” and “Cimler.”
The program also includes documentaries focusing on family memory, women’s stories, cultural heritage and environmental transformation, offering a broad look at social and personal histories through non-fiction cinema.
As part of the program, director Yesim Ustaoglu’s “Kuru Tasin Basi” (The Top of the Dry Stone) will also be screened. The film looks at the lives of people who had to move because of the Yusufeli Dam, a major infrastructure project that led to displacement in the region.
With its free screenings and wide thematic range, Documentarist will bring documentary cinema to Pera Museum audiences through films that reflect on social change, memory and justice.
