The Pera Museum in Istanbul is launching a new film program titled “Outside the Rules” to celebrate March 8, International Women's Day.

Organized by the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Pera Museum Film and Video Programs, the selection runs from March 6 to March 15 in Turkiye.

The program focuses on female directors who challenge traditional cinematic stories and social norms. The selection includes five films available through physical screenings at the museum auditorium and an online platform.

Classics on big screen

The "Outside the Rules" program explores women's desires and freedom through different eras.

The physical screenings feature two major 1960s classics that redefined cinema:

  • Daisies (Papatyalar): Directed by Vera Chytilova, this Czech New Wave masterpiece follows two women who mock social norms and traditional morality. The film is celebrated for its bold use of color and formal audacity.
  • The Cat Has Nine Lives (Dokuz Canli Kedi): Directed by Ula Stockl and regarded as West Germany's first major film of its kind. Set in Munich in 1967, it follows two women as they discuss liberation and navigate a male-dominated society.

Museum officials stated the program invites the audience to "question the boundaries of established narrative and representation forms in cinema."

Modern experimental works go digital

The digital portion of the program links the breakthroughs of the 1960s with todays emotional landscape.

Three experimental films by director Ceylan Ozgun Ozcelik will be available on the Pera Museum website from March 6 to March 13.

The films, titled “Ankebut,” “Witch Trilogy 13+,” and “Witch Trilogy 15+,” focus on themes of violence, fear, and resistance. These works offer a more internal and unsettling look at modern objections through a women-centered lens.

Physical screenings at the Pera Museum Auditorium follow this schedule:

  • Daisies: March 6 at 19:00 and March 14 at 15:00.
  • The Cat Has Nine Lives: March 7 at 15:00 and March 15 at 15:00.
