Historical stone inscriptions thought to be Aramaic have been uncovered during landscaping work in the Midyat district of Mardin, southeastern Türkiye.
According to Demiroren News Agency, the inscriptions were found in Ortaca, a rural neighborhood of Midyat, while municipal teams were carrying out landscaping work in the area. After people noticed writing on the stones, the authorities were informed, and security and museum teams were sent to the site.
Local gendarmerie units secured the area after the discovery, while Mardin Museum Directorate officials moved the inscribed stones to safety.
Initial assessments suggested that the finds may have historical value, but officials said the exact period of the inscriptions and the language used on the stones would only become clear after scientific study.
The inscriptions appear on more than one stone block, raising the possibility that they may be connected to historic structures in the area. However, no conclusion has yet been reached.
Authorities are now expected to examine the stones to determine whether the writing is Aramaic, as initially thought, and to establish which period the inscriptions belong to.
