Exhibition reinterprets Salvador Dali’s works through projections, augmented and virtual reality at a municipal center in Istanbul
The exhibition “Dali Cybernetics: Journey into the Mind of Genius” (“Dali Cybernetics: Dehanin Zihnine Yolculuk”) has opened at the Digital Experience Center in Istanbul. It interprets the works, scientific curiosity and surrealist world of Spanish painter Salvador Dali through digital technologies. The center operates under Kultur A.S., an affiliate of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB).
According to a Kultur AS statement, the exhibition first opened in Barcelona in 2022. It has since reached hundreds of thousands of visitors in 14 cities, including London, Berlin, Copenhagen, Lisbon and Athens. Istanbul is its first stop in Türkiye.
Developed with support from the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation and prepared by Barcelona-based Layers of Reality, the show reinterprets the artist’s works associated with melting clocks and optical illusions.
It uses large-scale projections, interactive installations, augmented reality and virtual reality. Spread across roughly 2,000 square meters, it also covers Dali’s interest in DNA, geometry, the fourth dimension and nuclear physics.
In “Dalivers: Dali’s Virtual Universe,” visitors travel on a virtual ship through surreal landscapes inspired by the artist’s imagination and interact with the elements around them.
The Cinema Room screens a film on Dali’s personality and approach to art. It draws on two documentaries: “Dali in New York” (1965) by Jack Bond and “Dali’s Fantastic Dream” (1966) by Albert and David Maysles.
A selection of photographs by Ara Guler, taken during his 1971 meetings with Dali, is also on display. Drawn from the Ara Guler Archive and Research Center collection, the images show moments from the artist’s life and working environment.
The Immersive Experience Room uses 30 4K projectors and 360-degree wall and floor projection to turn Dali’s works into a visual narrative. In the Surrealism Boulevard section, visitors color illustrations inspired by the artist’s designs and animate them digitally.
The Augmented Reality Room combines high-resolution LED screens with an installation based on Dali’s interest in DNA. It links the double helix structure and the transfer of genetic information to the artist’s imagination.
Kultur AS General Manager Cenk Akin said Dali’s interest in science and mathematics is reflected in the content. He said a new cinema hall was added to the center for the exhibition.
Layers of Reality Managing Partner Jordi Sellas i Ferres said the exhibition is built around the question of what Dali could have produced with today’s technology.
Kultur AS Museums Director Reha Oztunali said the center’s spatial layout was renewed during preparation and the capacity of the virtual reality area was expanded.
