Two thieves broke into a museum dedicated to French Impressionist painter Auguste Renoir in southern France on Tuesday, stealing four works of art valued at around €9 million ($10 million), according to the local mayor.
The theft took place in Cagnes-sur-Mer, where the suspects were picked up by the town's video surveillance system as they fled the museum.
Municipal surveillance cameras spotted the pair before they fled the scene, said Cagnes-sur-Mer Mayor Bryan Masson.
"Spotted thanks to the town's video surveillance cameras, the two individuals fled, abandoning one of the stolen paintings as they ran," Masson said.
The mayor's office estimated the value of the stolen works at €9 million, equivalent to about $10 million.
One of the paintings was therefore recovered after being abandoned during the escape, while the thieves made off with the remaining stolen works.
Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation unfolds.
