A rich and colorful traditional Turkish breakfast was introduced to an international audience in Brussels as part of World Breakfast Day celebrations, hosted by Türkiye’s Permanent Delegate to the European Union, Ambassador Faruk Kaymakci.

The event took place at the official residence of the Permanent Delegation, where Brussels-based journalists and diplomatic guests gathered to experience one of Türkiye’s most celebrated culinary traditions.

Feast of regional delights

Guests were treated to an array of dishes sourced from various regions across Türkiye, highlighting the immense diversity and depth of Turkish breakfast culture. From olives and cheeses to pastries, jams, eggs, and honey, the presentation reflected Türkiye’s vast gastronomic landscape.

Ambassador Kaymakci emphasized the cultural and nutritional value of the Turkish breakfast, noting, “It is considered one of the richest and healthiest breakfasts in the world. We are proud to share this heritage on a day that celebrates breakfast globally.”

The table featured regional specialties including Erzincan tulum cheese, Hatay olives, Black Sea-style muhlama, and homemade jams from the Aegean coast, offering a full spectrum of Türkiye’s culinary richness.

Cultural diplomacy through cuisine

Beyond food, the event served as a platform for soft diplomacy. Ambassador Kaymakci used the opportunity to share insights into Türkiye-EU relations, touching on the importance of mutual understanding, cooperation, and cultural exchange.

“This is not just about breakfast,” he said. “It’s about building bridges. Food opens hearts and minds, and today we are opening a window into Turkish life and values.”

The ambassador noted that culinary diplomacy plays a growing role in Türkiye’s international engagement, particularly in Europe, where shared traditions can help overcome political tensions.

Growing global curiosity

Turkish breakfast has been gaining international popularity in recent years, particularly in European capitals. Its emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients and its communal nature align with rising trends in sustainable and experiential dining.

The Brussels event highlighted this rising global interest, as international guests engaged with the stories behind each dish, reflecting Türkiye’s rich regional diversity.

The event concluded with Turkish tea and coffee, served alongside sweets and conversations about future cultural initiatives between Türkiye and the EU.
