A concert bringing together Turkish folk and classical music was held at the Yunus Emre Institute's Rome Turkish Cultural Center, drawing strong interest from listeners in the Italian capital.
The event, titled "Bir Tel, Bir Ses, Bir Nefes" (One String, One Voice, One Breath), featured ney player Seyfullah Ozbayrak, vocalist Ruveyda Sultan Kol and baglama musician Mucahit Kol.
The trio performed a selection of well-known pieces, including "Gel Gor Beni Ask Neyledi" (Come, See What Love Has Done to Me), "Bulbulum Altin Kafeste" (My Nightingale in a Golden Cage), "Evlerinin Onu Handir" (In Front of Their House Is an Inn), "Uskudar'a Gider Iken" (While Going to Uskudar), "Bir Capkina Yanginim" (I've Fallen for a Playboy) and "Hicaz Mandira" (Hicaz Dairy Farm).
During the concert, Italian audience members were seen joining in, especially with "Uskudar'a Gider Iken," one of the most widely recognized Turkish songs abroad.
The performance was met with strong appreciation, and the trio returned for two encores after the audience asked them to carry on.
Beyza Uzun Kutlay, director of the Yunus Emre Institute's Rome Turkish Cultural Center, said the center wanted to move into the summer season with a concert introducing Turkish music to audiences in Rome.
Speaking after the performance, vocalist Ruveyda Sultan Kol said the musicians were academics at Ankara Music and Fine Arts University and were also in Rome for their doctoral internships. She said this gave them the opportunity to put together a concert at the Yunus Emre Institute's Rome center.
Kol said the audience reaction made the performers very happy, adding that listeners did not want to leave when the concert ended and that the trio performed some pieces again. She also thanked the Yunus Emre Institute and Türkiye for making the event possible.
