Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense Mehter Band performed in New York’s Times Square as part of the 43rd Turkish Day Parade events, drawing attention from Turkish residents, visitors and passersby in one of the city’s busiest public spaces.
The concert was held under the supervision of Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications as part of this year’s Turkish Day Parade program in New York. The Mehter Band, a traditional military music ensemble historically associated with the Ottoman and Turkish military tradition, staged its performance in Times Square, a landmark known for bringing together people from many countries.
Colonel Deniz Ergun, commander of the Mehter Band, told Anadolu Agency that the ensemble represents a historic voice of the Turkish army that has carried across continents.
Ergun said the group was pleased with the interest shown during the performance, noting that Turkish residents in New York and people visiting the city’s famous square paid close attention to the concert.
“Everyone in this square, which is a tourist place, and especially the Turks living here, showed great interest in the music,” he said.
Cuneyt Yuksel, chair of the Turkish Parliament’s Justice Committee and an AK Party lawmaker from Istanbul, thanked everyone who contributed to the Mehter Band’s Times Square concert, where people from many nationalities came together.
“While some turn their backs on Mehter, we are here giving both the historical and universal message of Mehter,” he said.
AK Party Izmir lawmaker Ceyda Bolunmez Cankiri, who was among those watching the performance, said the interest in both the New York Turkish Day Parade and the Mehter Band’s concert was linked to Türkiye’s success in foreign policy.
