The Istanbul Governor's Office said Balikli Greek Hospital, which suffered severe damage in the Aug. 4, 2022 fire, has been brought back to life through restoration work carried out under the Yadigar project.
In a statement shared on its social media account, the governor's office said the restoration was conducted carefully by the Istanbul Governor's Office, Zeytinburnu Municipality and the Balikli Greek Hospital Foundation.
According to the statement, the hospital was built in 1753 by the guild of grocers and was formerly known as Yedikule Hospital. It first began serving in a small wooden building on the site where the European High School stands today.
The statement said the hospital served as a place of healing during plague outbreaks, which were common at the time.
Referring to the fire, the governor's office said the hospital was reconstructed in line with its original character by the Istanbul Governor's Office Investment Monitoring and Coordination Department, known as YIKOB, together with Zeytinburnu Municipality and the Balikli Greek Hospital Foundation.
As part of the restoration, the destroyed roof and the damaged second floor were rebuilt from top to bottom in two stages. Damage on the facade was also repaired in a way that matched the original design, while all joinery was remade in wood to preserve the building's historic identity.
The statement said the governor's office aims to carry monuments and civilization into the future through the Yadigar project.
It also included the following remarks: "As the Istanbul Governor's Office, with our Yadigar project, we carry our works and our civilization into the future. We leave a tribute to our ancestors and a strong legacy for our future."
