Scientific approaches in museums

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy highlighted the ongoing projects in a social media post, emphasizing the role of expert teams in preserving cultural assets.

He noted that wooden sarcophagi at Istanbul Archaeological Museums and historic textiles are being restored using original materials and scientifically guided techniques.

The minister acknowledged the dedication of the teams from the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, which are responsible for maintaining the authenticity of artifacts while preparing them for display.

Comprehensive restoration processes

The wooden sarcophagi in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum have undergone detailed documentation before restoration work began. Specialists at the Conservation and Restoration Center Laboratory recorded the condition of each piece using advanced photography under different lighting conditions to capture any deterioration.

Subsequent restoration included strengthening the original material, filling missing sections, and performing delicate touch-ups. Once completed, the artifacts were carefully prepared for exhibition in their new display cases.

Textile conservation with precision

Restoration efforts have extended beyond archaeological items to include textiles. Historic rugs at Kocaeli Osman Hamdi Bey House and Museum, as well as a ceremonial banner at Nevsehir Haci Bektas Veli Museum, were meticulously cleaned, documented, and repaired where necessary.

The restored textiles were packaged in acid-free boxes to ensure long-term preservation before returning to their respective museums for public viewing.

These carefully executed projects aim to maintain the original integrity of cultural assets while making them accessible to the public. By applying scientific restoration methods and leveraging the expertise of dedicated teams, Türkiye continues to safeguard its cultural heritage, passing it on to future generations with both care and authenticity.
