Gunmen opened fire on the car of Bollywood action star Tiger Shroff as he left a private event in Mumbai on Sunday evening, wounding his driver and another person, police said. Shroff was not hit.

Three suspects have been detained in the neighboring state of Rajasthan, authorities said, but police have not said why the actor was targeted.

Shooting in the heart of Bollywood

The shooting took place in Juhu, an upscale neighborhood of India’s financial capital, which is also the home of Bollywood, the country’s Hindi-language film industry.

Shroff is known for action films including the "Baaghi" series and "War." The shooting was caught on camera.

"Tiger Shroff is safe, and Mumbai police have deployed different teams to investigate further," police official Mohit Garg told reporters.

Tejaswani Gautam, a senior police official in the Rajasthan city of Kota, said the three suspects were detained shortly after arriving there by train. They will soon be handed over to Mumbai police, she said.

Preliminary questioning showed that two of the men each have a prior case against them, one for theft and one under India’s Arms Act, Gautam said.

Film industry condemns attack

The attack drew condemnation from the film industry. The All Indian Cine Workers Association said in a post on X that "if the fear of the underworld continues, leading names may be forced to leave Mumbai."

The group said it had written to India’s home minister demanding security for the actor’s family.

"Bollywood will not be allowed to work in the shadow of fear," the association said.

Maharashtra state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the shooting a "serious and condemnable matter."
