A British man who was supposed to remain in quarantine in Italy over fears linked to a hantavirus outbreak was reportedly found at a bar, in breach of public health instructions.
According to Metro, the man, believed to be in his 60s, and his travel companion were taken to Milan’s Sacco Hospital after being detained by authorities. The pair had reportedly been told to remain in quarantine until June 6 as part of a 42-day isolation period linked to potential exposure to the virus.
The British national was reportedly on the same flight from St. Helena to Johannesburg as 69-year-old Mirjam Schilperoord, who later died after contracting the virus.
Schilperoord was identified as the wife of Leo, a 70-year-old passenger described as the first fatal victim connected to the outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. Leo had reportedly joined a birdwatching trip to a remote island belonging to Argentina, where visitors had gone to a landfill site before infections emerged.
The quarantine violation has drawn attention as authorities continue to monitor people potentially exposed to the virus through travel linked to the cruise ship.
The number of reported hantavirus cases linked to the cruise ship outbreak has now risen to 11, with nine infections confirmed.
The outbreak has claimed three lives so far, while a French woman remains in critical condition after being placed on an artificial lung support system. Doctors reportedly said the machine was keeping her alive and described the treatment as the “final stage of supportive care.”
