Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza said Monday he met with Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire to discuss Gaza, Palestine, and his experiences documenting the lives of Palestinians.
Azaiza said in a post on the U.S. social media platform Instagram that he was honored to accept an invitation from Gregoire for “a meeting and an open conversation about Gaza, Palestine, and my journey as a Palestinian photojournalist.” He described the meeting as important and meaningful.
The discussions covered the reality of daily life in Gaza, the stories behind his photographs, and the responsibility everyone shares to ensure Palestinian voices are not forgotten, he said.
“What meant the most to me was his genuine interest in listening, his solidarity, and his willingness to explore ways to do more for Gaza and the Palestinian people,” Azaiza wrote.
After years spent documenting the suffering, resilience, and humanity of his people, he said it meant a great deal to see such conversations take place in spaces where decisions can be made and meaningful action can begin.
“I have always believed that photography is more than capturing a moment. It is a way of giving people a voice, preserving their stories, and reminding the world of our shared humanity,” he said.
Azaiza expressed hope that the discussions would produce tangible results. “My hope is that conversations like this will turn into real actions that make a difference in people’s lives,” he said.
He also thanked the mayor for the warm welcome, the meaningful conversation, and for keeping Gaza and Palestine in his thoughts.
“Our stories deserve to be heard. Our people deserve to live in freedom, dignity, and peace,” he added.
