As temperatures in Türkiye's Igdir ranged between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius (95-104 degrees Fahrenheit), residents overwhelmed by the heat chose the Karasu and Bulakbasi reed beds at the foot of Mount Agri to cool off and have picnics over the weekend.
In addition to residents of Igdir, visitors from neighboring provinces also took advantage of the cool natural spring waters and had picnics in the green areas.
Metin Ozturk, one of the residents, said they chose this area to cool off during the summer months, adding, "This is natural water. We have very nice water that comes from underground, reaching sub-zero degrees in some places.''
''Everyone from neighboring provinces and villages comes here on weekends. It is a very clean and cool water that comes from the highland waters connected to Mount Agri," he stated.
Hasan Kereci said the area also attracts interest from visitors coming from abroad and invited everyone to the area, which stands out for its natural beauty.
August is typically Igdir's hottest month, with average highs of around 31°C. The highest temperature recorded in Igdir in recent years was 41°C in July 2021.
The 35-40°C range reported this week is therefore well above the seasonal norm, pushing residents to seek relief in the shaded, water-fed areas at the foot of Mount Agri.
The mountain, an inactive volcano near Türkiye's borders with Armenia and Iran, is the country's highest peak at 5,137 meters (16,854 feet).
