Istanbul is bracing for more heavy rain, with showers expected to begin Friday morning, intensify overnight, and spread across the entire city on Saturday, according to a new warning from the Istanbul Governor’s Office on Thursday.
Citing the latest forecasts from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), the governor's office warned that the approaching weather system could bring further flooding, lightning and landslides, particularly as the effects of the severe rainfall recorded on Wednesday have yet to fully subside.
Heavy rainfall currently affecting the eastern Marmara region, which includes Istanbul and surrounding provinces in northwestern Türkiye, is expected to weaken Thursday night, offering only a brief break before another weather system moves in.
Rain is forecast to return Friday morning, with the heaviest initial downpours expected in Istanbul's northern districts, particularly on the European side, as well as eastern parts of neighboring Kirklareli province.
Conditions are expected to worsen from Friday night, with rain intensifying before spreading across Istanbul on Saturday.
The governor's office said heavy rain would also continue in Kirklareli and surrounding areas throughout Saturday.
The Istanbul Governor's Office urged residents to remain cautious as the new rainfall system approaches, emphasizing that the adverse conditions caused by the Oct. 14 storms are still affecting the region.
Authorities warned that the renewed downpours could trigger flash floods, waterlogging, lightning and landslides, calling on the public to take precautions against the expected severe weather.
The warning comes as Istanbul prepares for another period of unsettled weather, with rainfall expected to affect northern districts first before spreading across the city over the weekend.
