A cold and wet weather system is set to affect Istanbul and much of northwestern Türkiye from Friday, Dec. 26, according to Türkiye’s Meteorology General Directorate.

Authorities warn that temperatures will fall sharply in the coming days, bringing rain, sleet, and snowfall in higher areas, with icy conditions expected during the night and early morning hours.

The cold spell is expected to last into the first days of the new year and affect transportation, agriculture, and daily life across several regions.

Rain, sleet, snow expected across Istanbul and Marmara

Meteorology officials said the Marmara region will enter a cold and rainy period starting Friday.

Rain will affect Istanbul at first, while nearby provinces such as Kocaeli, Sakarya, and Yalova will begin to see mixed rain and snow from Saturday.

In Istanbul, rainfall will continue through Friday. On Saturday, sleet is expected in the higher parts of the Anatolian side. By Monday, December 29, mixed rain and snow will spread across the city, with snowfall possible in elevated areas.

Meteorology also warned that the weather pattern will remain unsettled into early January. Rain is expected in lower areas, while higher elevations may see snowfall as temperatures continue to drop.

Temperatures to fall sharply as cold air moves in

According to official forecasts, temperatures across the region will fall by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius compared to seasonal averages.

Cold conditions are expected to persist through the first week of January.

Between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, the lowest temperatures are forecast as follows:

  • Istanbul: 0 degrees Celsius
  • Edirne: -3 degrees Celsius
  • Kirklareli: -3 degrees Celsius
  • Tekirdag: -1 degree Celsius
  • Kocaeli: -1 degree Celsius
  • Sakarya: -2 degrees Celsius
  • Yalova: 1 degree Celsius

Meteorologists warned that freezing conditions during the night and early morning hours may cause ice formation on roads and sidewalks.

Turkish authorities warn against ice, frost, agricultural risk

Authorities issued warnings for icing and frost, particularly during overnight hours. Drivers are advised to remain cautious, especially in elevated areas and on intercity roads.

The cold weather also raises concerns for agriculture. Meteorology officials said frost could damage crops in regions where agricultural activity continues during winter. Farmers have been advised to take protective measures against frost.

Will it snow on New Year's Day in Istanbul?

Forecasts show that the cold spell will continue into the New Year.

Precipitation is expected across much of the country, with rain in low-lying areas and snow at higher elevations.

Meteorology officials said temperatures are unlikely to rise significantly in the coming days. Cold air will remain effective across Marmara and large parts of central and northern Türkiye.

Authorities continue to monitor conditions and urge residents to follow official updates, particularly those planning travel during the holiday period.
