Federico Pagano, a 32-year-old traveler from Italy, has reached Duzce in northwestern Türkiye after setting off from Milan about two months ago on a bicycle journey toward Tokyo.

Pagano has covered more than 3,000 kilometers since leaving Italy, turning a long-held interest in cycling and Japanese culture into a cross-continental journey that he is also sharing on social media.

Long route grows out of a deep interest in Japan

Pagano first went to Tokyo in 2023 to learn the language and later worked at a hotel in the Japanese capital. After returning to Italy in 2025, he decided to set out again for Japan, this time by bicycle.

He aims to introduce Japanese culture to a wider audience through social media and eventually return to the country to work in tourism. Speaking in Duzce, he said he had loved cycling since childhood and had long wanted to cross Japan, and even China, by bicycle.

“I am on a journey from Milan to Tokyo. I have done bicycle tours in the past. For years, I wanted to cross Japan and even China by bicycle. I thought now was the right time to set off from Milan and go to Tokyo. I am sharing my journey on social media, and I hope it will create job opportunities that will allow me to do what I want in the future. I want to work in tourism in Japan for Italians and organize tours,” Pagano said.

Duzce cycling community welcomes Italian traveler

After arriving in Duzce, Pagano visited the Duzce Cycling Club, where he was welcomed by club president Birol Aksu.

Aksu said the club would host Pagano in the city and noted that Duzce receives several foreign cyclists each year. He said such visits help introduce the city while also showing local hospitality.

“We have guests who come from abroad by bicycle three or four times a year. Federico is one of them. We both introduce Duzce and show our hospitality,” Aksu said.
