Yenice linden honey, produced in Türkiye's Karabuk Yenice district and renowned for its distinctive aroma, amber-yellow color and linden scent, has been officially registered as a European Union Geographical Indication (GI).
Karabuk Governor Mustafa Yavuz stated that the E.U. registration is a significant achievement for the city’s agricultural and natural products. “This recognition allows us to promote our unique products nationally and internationally, ensuring they gain the recognition they deserve,” he said.
Governor Yavuz noted that Karabuk currently has nine nationally registered geographical indication products. The E.U. registration process for Yenice linden honey was supported by the Western Black Sea Development Agency, Yenice District Governorate, Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and the Karabuk Beekeepers’ Association.
“After thorough evaluations, our application was published three months ago and is now officially listed in the E.U.’s Official Journal,” Yavuz explained. “Yenice linden honey is the 43rd Turkish product to obtain E.U. geographical indication registration. This is a proud moment for both Karabuk and our country.”
With this recognition, the Yenice linden honey joins a prestigious list of Turkish products that includes Gaziantep baklava, Aydin figs, Malatya apricots, Giresun hazelnuts, Antakya kunefe, Safranbolu saffron, Afyon pastirma, Erzincan tulum cheese and Bursa peaches.
The governor highlighted that 74% of Karabuk and 87% of Yenice are covered by forests, reflecting the region’s rich biodiversity. “Our linden-flavored and floral-scented honey is now officially recognized, which will help promote it across Europe and the world,” he said.
He also noted that the GI registration will enhance commercialization, increase market value and provide higher incomes for local beekeepers, while contributing to the sustainable development of apiculture in the region.
