An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 struck the Sindirgi district of Balikesir at 9:58 p.m. local time Sunday. The tremor was also felt in Izmir, Bursa, and Istanbul.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake had its epicenter in Sindirgi and occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers.

AFAD says no negative incident reported

No negative developments have been reported so far.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on X that “all teams from AFAD and relevant institutions have immediately begun field surveys in relation to the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that was felt in neighboring provinces in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir.”

Meanwhile, AFAD announced that there were no negative incidents related to the earthquakes that occurred in the Sindirgi.

Afterschoks continue in Balikesir

Following the initial quake, two more earthquakes struck the area at 10:00 p.m. and 10:14 p.m., measuring 4.2 and 4.3 in magnitude, respectively.

The 4.2-magnitude tremor occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers, while the 4.3-magnitude quake was recorded at a depth of 7.01 kilometers, both with epicenters in Sindirgi, AFAD reported.

Türkiye’s northwestern province of Balikesir continues to experience seismic activity following a deadly 6.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Sindirgi on Aug. 10.

Türkiye sits atop several geological fault lines responsible for past devastating earthquakes. In February 2023, a quake in the southwest killed at least 53,000 people and severely damaged Antakya, home to the ancient city of Antioch.

More recently, a 5.8-magnitude tremor in the same region in early July caused one death and injured 69 people.
