Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes Balikesir province in western Türkiye

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province in western Türkiye on Sept. 7, 2025, at 12:35 p.m. local time, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.72 kilometers (4.8 miles), with its epicenter in the Sindirgi district.

The tremor was felt in Balikesir as well as surrounding provinces and in Izmir, according to information posted on AFAD's website.

Emergency response activated after seismic event

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed on Sunday the earthquake and announced the immediate deployment of emergency teams.

"A 4.9-magnitude earthquake has occurred in Balikesir Sindirgi. Regarding the earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces, all teams from AFAD and our relevant institutions have immediately begun field surveys," Yerlikaya stated.

The interior minister extended his wishes to affected citizens, adding: "I extend my get-well wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May Allah protect our country and our nation from disasters."

The earthquake's impact extended beyond Balikesir province, with residents in neighboring areas and the major coastal city of Izmir reporting feeling the tremor.

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus offered his condolences to citizens affected by the earthquake in Balikesir's Sindirgi district.

In a message shared on his social media account, Kurtulmus said, "I extend my condolences to all citizens affected by the earthquake in Balikesir's Sindirgi district. May Allah protect our country and our nation from all disasters."
