A family court in Istanbul, has approved a divorce settlement that includes financial support and care arrangements for the couple’s pets, highlighting a growing focus on animal welfare in family law.
The case involves Bugra B., who filed for divorce from his wife Ezgi B. after two years of marriage due to severe incompatibility. In their settlement agreement, the couple agreed on the termination of the marriage and on a financial compensation of ₺550,000 ($13,104) to be paid by Bugra B. to Ezgi B.
The settlement also addresses the couple’s two cats. According to the agreement, the cats will remain in Ezgi B.’s custody, while Buğra B. will pay ₺10,000 ($238) every three months for their care for up to ten years. These payments will increase annually in line with the Consumer Price Index published by the Turkish Statistical Institute.
Under Turkish law, pets are considered movable property. However, recent rulings based on the Animal Protection Law No. 5199 have allowed courts to approve agreements regarding the custody, care, and financial support of animals following divorce.
While similar cases have occurred before, this settlement is notable for establishing structured, long-term financial support for pets, which may serve as a precedent for future divorce agreements involving animals.
The court is expected to review the case in the coming days.
