British designer Stella McCartney thanked Jennifer Lopez on Wednesday for attending her latest catwalk show in Paris for free. McCartney also criticized brands for paying celebrities to appear at fashion events.
Lopez, known for the song "Jenny from the Block," sat in the front row at the presentation of McCartney's Spring-Summer 2027 collection. The show took place at the British ambassador's residence in Paris, France.
Speaking to reporters, McCartney said Lopez had been "such a pleasure" and "came to support me." "She is not the diva that you all thought she was," McCartney said.
McCartney said journalists don't discuss payment at fashion shows.
"At the end of the day, which none of you talk about, everyone's paid to go to shows, and it's kind of a false economy," she said.
She added that her label relies on guests who attend voluntarily. "At Stella, we just have beautiful people supporting our brand, and Jen did that this season, and I'm just so thrilled," McCartney said.
Some major brands such as Dior or Chanel have a stable of declared brand ambassadors, celebrity faces who represent them at shows and in advertisements. Other labels arrange private one-off arrangements for celebrities to attend a catwalk show and pose for photographers. The arrangements produce shareable content that helps promote the label online.
McCartney again criticized major fashion conglomerates such as LVMH and Kering for failing to invest enough in sustainable fabrics and materials. She said such materials are needed to replace mainstays, including oil-based polyester, water-intensive cotton, and animal products such as wool and leather.
"We need the big players to help scale it up and help the price points come into what they're used to, because their margins are massive. My margins are tiny," she said.
"So we just need them to help," McCartney added.
