Schools across Türkiye will be closed on Friday as authorities prepare for the nationwide High School Entrance System (LGS) examination scheduled for the following day, Education Minister Yusuf Tekin announced.

Speaking at the Turkish Parliament under the government's "Duty Minister" program, Tekin said the administrative leave day would allow schools designated as examination centers to complete final preparations for the exam, which was recently rescheduled from Sunday to Saturday.

The minister said the date change was made to avoid a conflict with the Turkish national football team's 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Australia, enabling students and their families to follow the game without concerns about the examination schedule.

"We wanted both our students and their families to enjoy the excitement of supporting the national team," Tekin said. "We hope our national team achieves a successful result and that our students perform well in their exams."

According to Tekin, preparations that would normally be carried out on Saturday for a Sunday examination will now take place on Friday. The measure is also expected to provide students with additional time to rest before the test and allow parents to focus on supporting their children.

More than 1 million students to take exam

The LGS examination will be held in two sessions on June 13, with the first beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 11:30 a.m.

A total of 1.02 million candidates are expected to sit the examination. The majority of the students will take the test at 4,244 buildings across 81 provinces and 920 districts in Türkiye, while 554 students will sit the exam at 11 centers in eight countries abroad.

The Ministry of National Education will also provide nutrition packages to students who requested them during registration.

The packages will contain a dried-fruit oat bar, walnuts, raisins and water, aimed at helping students meet their nutritional needs between sessions and reducing exam-related stress.

Tekin said approximately 91% of candidates opted to receive the nutrition package.

Students who requested the package and those who did not will be placed in separate examination rooms or buildings to accommodate dietary preferences and potential allergy concerns.
