Gwyneth Paltrow leaned into online speculation over a supposed dinner with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman by posting a series of satirical invitations on Instagram this week.
The Goop founder and Academy Award-winning actress shared a carousel of faux invites addressed to fictional characters, including M3GAN, Samantha Jones from "Sex and the City," Shrek, and Jessica Rabbit from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."
One image read: "Gwyneth Paltrow invites you to a private, off-the-record al fresco dinner at her home in honor of M3GAN." In the caption of the post, shared Thursday afternoon with her 9.2 million followers, Paltrow wrote that the menu would include swordfish burritos and cheddar foam lattes on request.
The posts followed reports that Paltrow is set to host Altman for an off-the-record dinner at her home in Amagansett, a hamlet in the Hamptons region of New York state, on Saturday, Aug. 29. Puck journalist Matthew Belloni first reported the dinner.
The report quickly spread across social media, with users speculating about the purpose of the gathering and Paltrow's growing profile in the technology sector.
Neither Paltrow nor Altman has confirmed whether the invitation or the dinner itself is genuine. The Hollywood Reporter said it contacted representatives for both, and an OpenAI spokesperson declined to comment.
A reporter from BBC Verify, the broadcaster's fact-checking unit, wrote on social media platform X that the invite likely appeared to have been generated using OpenAI tools.
This is not the first time Paltrow has drawn attention for her ties to the artificial intelligence industry. In July, following a viral moment at a Coldplay concert involving two senior executives from data automation company Astronomer, Paltrow appeared in a promotional video for the firm.
In the video, she said she was hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the company's more than 300 employees, addressed the concert incident in a deliberately corporate tone, then pivoted to promote the firm's software and an upcoming company event.
The video was widely shared online and generated further attention for both Paltrow and Astronomer. Paltrow was previously married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who was performing at the concert when the moment occurred and referenced it on stage.
Paltrow has also reportedly invested in several artificial intelligence-focused start-ups, though the specific companies and amounts have not been publicly disclosed.
Separately, her food brand Goop Kitchen signed a lease for a location at 405 Howard Street in San Francisco as part of an expansion of its fast-casual restaurant business. The building also houses part of the headquarters of artificial intelligence company Anthropic.
