Beachgoers in Oman have been treated to an unusual sight: pink dolphins gliding through the waters just off the coast.
Videos filmed over the past week at Qantab Beach, near the capital, Muscat, show pale, pink-tinged animals surfacing alongside darker members of their pod. Several sightings have been reported, with onlookers cheering and recording as the dolphins swam close to shore.
The animals appeared healthy and active.
Experts say the animals are likely Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins or Risso’s dolphins.
The species has not been confirmed. Humpback dolphins lighten from dark grey at birth to pale or white in adulthood, and their skin can flush pink when they are active as blood vessels near the surface widen to release body heat. Risso’s dolphins also grow paler with age as white scars accumulate on their bodies.
The sightings highlight the variety of marine life found in the waters off Oman, which has a long coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman.
