Turkish national chess player, Grandmaster Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, has entered the world's top 20 ranking following a victory at the Chess Olympiad.
According to a statement from the Turkiye Chess Federation, the 15-year-old player won his match today in Samarkand, a city in eastern Uzbekistan, Central Asia.
Erdogmus, born June 3, 2011, earned the International Master title in 2022 and the Grandmaster title in 2024, becoming one of the youngest players in history to reach the rank.
In May 2026, he became the youngest player ever to cross a FIDE rating of 2700, a threshold held by only a small number of elite players worldwide. His rating currently stands at 2716.
The teenager has built his reputation through a series of high-profile results, including a win over Indian grandmaster Aditya Mittal at the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss and a tied sixth-place finish at the Tata Steel Masters at age 14. He also won the European Under-8 Chess Championship in 2019 with a perfect score.
The Turkiye Chess Federation congratulated the young athlete following today's result.
