Passengers on flights in Türkiye will now be entitled to free drinking water under a new directive issued by the country’s civil aviation authority, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Sunday.

In a statement, Uraloglu said an instruction was sent to all airline operators engaged in passenger transportation through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, requiring them to provide each passenger with at least 200 milliliters of water free of charge during flights.

“Within the scope of the directive we sent to all airline operators engaged in passenger transportation through our Directorate General of Civil Aviation, it will be mandatory to provide each passenger with at least 200 milliliters of drinking water free of charge during the flight,” Uraloglu said.

“Under this practice, flight durations will not be taken into consideration," he added.

Reducing health risks

Uraloglu said the move aims to protect passenger health and improve comfort.

He noted that, particularly in summer months, during long waiting periods, or when cabin ventilation is insufficient, depriving passengers of water can cause problems ranging from headaches and loss of concentration to medical emergencies.

“With this practice, we aim both to reduce health risks and to increase flight satisfaction,” he said.

“In examples of international operational best practices, meeting passengers’ basic needs is also considered among the responsibilities of operators. Offering passengers free drinking water will enhance passenger satisfaction as well as the international reputation of our operators.”
