Türkiye recorded broad participation and strong individual performances in the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026, released by Times Higher Education and Schmidt Science Fellows.
The ranking evaluated 911 universities across 94 countries and regions and measured the strength of institutions that combine multiple scientific fields in their research environments.
According to the report, India ranked first worldwide for total participation as Türkiye followed with 82 universities, which placed the country in second position ahead of the United States.
Türkiye recorded a notable presence in ISR 2026 as several major universities improved their positions and strengthened the country’s visibility in interdisciplinary research. Koc University recorded the strongest performance for Türkiye in ISR 2026.

THE’s report noted that Türkiye’s wide participation created a strong presence in the regional and global distribution of institutions.
THE uses a structure that measures both institutional capacity and research output. Inputs include funding for interdisciplinary work and cooperation with industry.
The ranking also evaluates the research environment, which includes laboratories, centers and academic support structures. Outputs reflect the number of interdisciplinary publications, the citations they receive and researcher evaluations of institutional quality.
MIT ranked first in ISR 2026. Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology followed. Seven institutions from the United States entered the global top 10.
Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore represented Asia at the top level. Wageningen University and Research ranked high for Europe.
Covenant University led the Africa region. The University of Sao Paulo led Latin America and RMIT University ranked highest in Australia.
Asia recorded the highest number of institutions in the ranking with 486 universities. Europe recorded 203. Africa recorded 98 and Latin America recorded 79. Türkiye’s position among these regions reflected the country’s rising focus on interdisciplinary structures and its ambition to increase scientific visibility at the global level.
